i
I
MASHPEE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT/INDUSTRIAL CORP. MINUTES
NOVEMBER 29, 2010
Present: Bob Walsh, Robyn Simmons, Terrie Cook, Mary LeClair.
Also: Bill Newton, Assis. Town Planner, and Eric Turkington.
Bob Walsh, Acting Chair, opened the meeting at bPM, in Rm 2.
The Minutes of October 25, 2010 were moved, seconded, and approved by roll call vote.
Terrie Cook abstained.
Correspondence: EDIC has been informed that we have been invited to the second round
of our grant request, but our request for $75,000 in a joint effort with Falmouth is not
feasible. The Committee will send a follow-up letter, after talking with the Falmouth
contingent.
There has been some effort to recruit new members to the EDIC. Mary has spoken with
Jim Vaccaro and Doug,Storrs. A real estate background is preferred.
I
Bill Newton took the Committee through an update of the Mashpce Economic
Development Plan Outline and SWOT: Identify Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities,
and Threats.
As a general comment, there is strong demand for health/housing facilities with the aging
population. Retail, hospitality, restaurants, food services have room to grow. A
weakness is that there is no public sewer. There is 1150 acres of land available, but mostly
in small parcels. MMR has potential for wind energy and a wastewater treatment facility
that could be shared with the 12 Towns. The Industrial Park has the potential to re-zone
for emerging industries. Bill would like to help the Committee come up with a consensus
on where EDIC wants to go. He suggests a SWOT analysis/matrix, pursuing strengths
and matching them with.opportunities. He will provide more information to the
Committee before their next meeting.
Eric Turkington had a few comments and suggestions. Ocean research is a dominant
industry here. Look for start up grants from the State. It helps to travel up to Boston and
meet with people. Perhaps a meeting with the new State Senator Dan Wolf would be
advantageous. Mary LeClair knows him, and she and Bob Walsh can set up some
meetings in Boston. Southport is a good model for senior housing, increase senior
housing/facilities with re-zoning. The Federal Tribe has access to federal money and Iand
swaps. The Secretary of the Interior is pro Native American and Wind Energy. Bob
Walsh suggested that re-zoning the EDIC two acres might open our options.
The next meeting will be posted. The committee moved to adjourn, seconded, and
unanimously agreed by roll call vote.
 r
