_ BOARD OF LIBRARY TRUSTEES ES - REGULAR MONTHLY MEETING TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8,2009 TOWN HALL MEETING ROOM Present: David Burton, Carlo D'Este, John Kowalski, Patricia Garnache, Jane Dolan,Nancy Soderberg,and Helene IeFoe, Library Director. Absent: Dianna Smith. David Burton, Chairman, called the meeting to order at 6:03 p.m. Aj)proval of Minutes Nancy Soderberg motioned to accept the minutes of the Meeting of August 17, 2009; John Kowalski seconded this motion; and the motion was unanimously approved. Reports The regular monthly reports for the month of August from Helene DeFoe,the CLAMS circulation statistics, and from Janet Burke were reviewed and discussed. These reports are attached to the printed set of these minutes. -addition to the reports, the Trustees reviewed and had in-depth discussion on the following 3 documents that provide statistics on the issue of the critical necessity to increase library staffing with the move to the new, large library building in 2010. Population size taken from the 2008 update of the 2000 census bureau statistics; new census will be done m 20 10 and most assuredly Ma.shpee population size will increase with the result being that we will move into the next higher level group. If we go up to the next group,then we have to be open 50 hogs to maintain certification. Concerns Problems with Current StaffmLevels for the New Libr Buildi These are some of the concerns the library stair has. Looking at hove they do things now and hove are they going to be able to do things when staff is too thin. Just as one example, Helene said if people have problems g g g with computer/printers they need staff assistance and that is another service we'd have to cut back. Patrons are used to staff innmediately fixing the problem, if they can. With short staffing, we will not.be able to respond o these problems each tinne. e ill schedule maintenance tunes at specific times of the day and deal with the computer problems all at pace. Computers with problems will go off-lire until the scheduled maintenance time. We will have more computers in the new building so it won't be as big a hardship as our current situation of only tree computers. Helene said that somebody got a floppy disk stuck and Bridgette i had to get it out for them right away. David added that for some patrons this is the only access to a computer that they have and we should be able to have staff available to assist if needed.
