Meeting was called to order at 2: 00 p,m. by Chairman Benway.. 2. Chairman announced that the next Selectmen v s meeting will he on September 3, 1980 at 7: 00 p.m,, . Chairman announced that the Board would act upon the promotion of sergeant to the Police Department. The nares submitted to the Board for consideration were: Edgar Burroughs , William Ethier, Donald Bevalua and Bradford Fish. All candidates underwent all oral and written exams and interviews. Floor was opened for discussion. Selectman Garland stated that he would life to make a staterment: "Inasmuch as the informal discussions between you and I , I thinly you are aware of the fact that you and I disagreed as to our individual choice of selection for promotion to sergeant. However, in the essence of time and in the essence of resoling. this appointment and not to put it off an } longer, you and I came to somewhat .of a mutual understanding. On the basis of that,, I nominate Donald Beva qua. " Selectman Thomas stated that she would also like to make a statement: "I was ,involved in the discussions of sergeant and upon the advice of Town Counsel, I will refrain from voting on the appointment of sergeant. However, the Board has informally deliberated in length the recommendations of the Personnel Board concerning this appointment, and I fully support the nomination to be made. " Chairman asked Selectman Thomas of whom. Selectman Thomas responded, Mr. Garland will retake the nominations Chairman stated that since Mrs. Thomas is exempting herself officially from taking part in the vote, I will , as Chairman, second the nomination by Mr. Garland and call for a vote. se lec man Garland responded affirmative. Chairman stated that' s 2 in the affirmative and 1 abstaining, namely, Mrs,, Thomas. with that action, Patrolman Ronald Be aqua becomes Sergeant Donald Bevalua as of this date.
