AFFIRMATIVE ACTION COMMITTEE MINUTES
SEPTEMBER 7, 2004
Present: Norma Kumin, Melbourne Cragwell, Marilyn Farren, Myrna Nuey,
Gordon Green, Elaine Good, Jan Strickland. Also, Sharon Smith, Kay Brown.
Meeting opened at 5:10 p.m.
Minutes of July 27 and August 10, 2004 were moved and accepted as presented.
Revised Mission Statement was reviewed by the Committee and approved.
Melbourne noted that the Affirmative Action Policy is filled with information that
needs to be applied and investigated as far as hiring practices and meeting
criteria numbers pertaining to hiring minorities, women, and handicapped in the
Town of Mashpee, "Community" is mentioned throughout the policy. We are
an Anti-Defamation League community that speaks out against hate, not just a
program to educate. A discussion ensued on Affirmative Action's involvement
with ADL, the State Agency.
The committee agrees that we need an active liaison member from the Board of
Selectmen. We need community involvement and outreach. Louise Patrick from
the Mashpee Human Services department could invite the community to help.
Marilyn F. suggested writing a letter to the Board of Selectmen soliciting an
interested member from the Board of Selectmen to attend our meetings.
Sharon Smith and her mother Kay Brown expressed an interest in becoming
members of the Affirmative Action Committee. They expressed outrage about
the Pocknett incident in Town and the lack of action on the part of the Affirmative
Action Committee to take a stand and express it in a statement to the Board of
Selectmen.
The Committee decided to take a vote to go into Executive Session to discuss
the recent incident in Mashpee involving a minority and the Police Department,
and not return to Open Session.
A roll call vote was taken and all six members voted yes.
Adjourned 6:20 p.m.
Mary Gelsthorpe, Recording Secretary
