29. To encourage the establishment or expansion of environmental, biotechnology, marine technology, <br /> electronics and software businesses in Mashpee. <br /> 30. To oppose and discourage the development of any gambling casino on Cape Cod because casinos <br /> produce stresses on the region's environment, its limited transportation infrastructure and economy. <br /> 31. To oppose and discourage the location or continued operation of any "adult" businesses in Mashpee in a <br /> manner consistent with the provisions of state and federal laws. <br /> 32. To encourage the use of local suppliers and the employment of local contractors and minority and <br /> women contractors on local construction projects. <br /> Action Plan <br /> Short-term (first 6 months) <br /> • Formalize the Economic Development Committee. Town meeting should adopt a formal bylaw <br /> B defining the Committee's membership, organization and responsibilities. <br /> • The EDC should form a Marketing Subcommittee to undertake the following tasks: <br /> begin work on developing marketing materials; <br /> oplan a summer expo and displays at summer festivals and performances oriented towards tourists and <br /> non-resident taxpayers; and <br /> begin discussions with Internet providers on adding information to the Mashpee Web site. <br /> • The EDC should form a Business Outreach Subcommittee and make initial contacts with major <br /> employers. <br /> • The Economic Development Committee and its staff should continue to meet with the owners of <br /> the Industrial Park to discuss priorities and opportunities for collaboration <br /> • The EDC should call a meeting of all relevant actors in order to start the process of creating a <br /> Tourism Coordinating Council. <br /> • The EDC should initiate the formation of an interdepartmental task force on aquaculture. <br /> • The Planning Department should: <br /> ° meet with the Cape Cod Center for the Environment and a Sustainable Economy to review its <br /> progress on the eco-resort and to discuss potential ways to collaborate; <br /> ° work with the owners of the Mashpee Industrial Park to develop design guidelines for new <br /> development in the Park; and <br /> sponsor a forum or focus group on retailing in Mashpee to better understand the interests and needs <br /> of residents. <br /> • Town Meeting should define regional,village and industrial growth/activity centers as part of the <br /> Land Use & Growth Management element of the Comprehensive Plan in order to focus economic <br /> development activity in appropriate areas. <br /> • The EDC should form an Education and Training Subcommittee that <br /> holds a forum with the business community to discuss curriculum and school-to-work projects;and <br /> meets with new high school staff on developing entrepreneurial training and environmental <br /> curriculums. <br /> 19 <br /> u <br />
