700 feet from the utility easement to the edge of the athletic field , for
the performing arts center . The town owned piece of property could provide
access or siting for the facility , if they choose .
The potential access would be off of Old Barnstable Rd . , south of the
housing authority lot.
Mr. Thompson said at one time there was talk of potential shared parking ,
that seems eradicated in this plan .
Dan explained it is not convenient for the high school to bring the parking
to the southern portion of property ; it is most convenient off of Old
Barnstable Rd .
Mr. Thompson said he sees a problem that 700 feet is not enough room to fit
their program. They are also after a retreat like feeling , up against the
power easement you loose that . Width and space is a real issue .
Is there some way to re-shape the housing authority parcel . They don ' t want
to go any further east than the 400 feet .
Doug asked if the housing authority parcel is flexible?
Tom said it is flexible if the housing authority will be flexible .
Mr. Thompson said they also like the idea of having walking access to the
river. He asked what the acreage is for the parcel remaining for their
facility?
About 15 acres .
Dan said presently the baseball fields are setback 650 feet from the river.
There is room for future ballfield expansion to the east.
Tom reminded everyone there are environmental issues , that area is a deer
wintering area and Trout Unlimited will have issues .
The Committee asked Mr. Thompson how many acres he anticipates needing?
He explained there are 3 phases to the project, theater , artist housing and
then expanded theater . By the third phase he will need 35 acres .
They will have to re-visit their plans and see if it will fit within this
layout and maintain the atmosphere they are looking for.
Paul Griffin said any shared facilities will be a nightmare, it will pull
the town apart.
Mr . Thompson agreed it is better not to share any facilities.
Peter explained the Committee will begin to research the feasibility of
taking some of the housing authority property .
Mr . Thompson asked about the possibility of a shared entrance at Old
Barnstable Rd , which splits as it comes into the property .
The Committee thought congestion would be an issue .
Paul is concerned the town will not maintain this property the way a
private entity will . Do they want their entrance not to be maintained the
way they would expect it to be?
Peter explained the Town ' s goal is to get the school open by Sept . 1996 . We
need to work out an agreement as soon as possible to keep with our
schedule .
4
