Bill Martiros said the Committee should not pay attention to presentations.
You have to look at the school and talk to the people using the school to
get the honest opinion. The Warren school had design flaws.
Joe said Earl is a good architect. They have produced interesting, nice
things . It may not work out for them to work with Mashpee.
Steve after feed back from the site visit and the coverup of litigation in
Belmont, agreed they are no longer being considered.
Michael said based on their presentation they were very good . They have a
lot of high school experience but it seems that is not reality.
Peter talked about the forgotten stairwell which then cut in half the
teachers room in Warren.
HMFH
Bill Jones has seen some of their work, Wareham and the 2 Sandwich schools
and he things they resemble jails in their architectural philosophy. They
were built on time and budget but aesthetically they are distressing. They
are a powerful firm.
Merry Sue is not impressed by them. They have built on Cape, which is a
plus, but is more impressed by other firms.
Janice can ' t say anything bad but can 't jump up and down either.
Paul thinks they have some good points, i .e . know about rebates from
computer companies and utilities. They are up to speed on energy
management systems , use CO detectors. He doesn ' t think they have flair,
but if picked they would do a good job.
Bill Martiros thinks they could do the work. He thinks most of these firms ,
with input, will give you the school you want. This firm could build a
good school .
Joan said she reviewed their presentation. She has been in the Sandwich
schools and likes them.
Joe likes the interior of Wareham. It is quiet, the students like the
school . They are a strong firm and could do the job but agrees there may be
others firms which are better.
Steve said they did Sandwich a disservice, those two schools cost a lot
more than they should have. They spent far too much on design , it got out
of hand.
Michael said they have a lot of school experience. They did not do a site
evaluation. They have at rack record of failed high tech work in their
last 5 schools. He was not impressed.
Peter thinks they could do the job. They are a solid firm with in house
capabilities.
DRA
Bill Jones said they have produced 2 schools he finds difficult to
appreciate - Sandwich High School and Fall River. Fall River is
unacceptable as a school , on a bad site but there were some interesting
aspects like the rubber floors. The noise level was unacceptable. Feels
they have limited imagination. Compared with the other firms on the list,
they are not his choice.
Merry Sue said Sandwich was built when the style was to build enclosed
boxes. She likes DRA, the size of the firm, they have been around a long
time. They use a lot of subcontractors but on a regular basis. Their
schools have imagination , they tackle things that are difficult. Mashpee 's
3
