Michael ranked them second . They have good experience in building schools.
A good working relationship with high tech consultants.
Peter said he wouldn ' t classify the errors at Fall River with the ones we
saw in the Groton school ( Keyes) , those were major flaws and this was only
detail . He feels the firm chosen has to understand how a school program
works and how to translate it into a building. DRA has that capability to
do that.
He visited Harwich Vocational High School , the Superintendent said to this
day DRA gives them support to keep the building up to speed and ensure
their needs are satisfied - 20 years later. He was very satisfied with
DRA.
The Fall River sight was very tight. They had a good understanding of how
a school works. The kids and teachers liked the building .
Steve explained there is general construction and "shop work" . The
architect is responsible for the quality of the material brought on site -
shop work. At Fall River , he got the impression no one ever looked at it.
Symes Maini and McKee
Bill Jones said he could find no flaws in any area of this firm. He rated
them number one. He checked some references and they were favorable. They
proposed to work with Perkins and Will and they have done some very nice
looking schools.
Merry Sue liked them a lot. However, their programming is done out of
State. The two firms have designed a high school together - Chelsea. She
is concerned about the distance but there seems to be someone in charge in
Massachusetts. She liked some of the things they said - buildings looking
nice at night. She is concerned about their dedication to us with Chelsea
school going on at the same time.
Janice was not at the interview but has spoken with others who were and
they all had good, warm things to say about SMMA.
Paul asked, if Perkins and Will were not teamed with SMMA would we have
picked them? Perkins and Will have bid a lot of jobs around the country
and do a lot of partnerships. At Chelsea, since the programming was done,
Perkins and Will has not attended any other meetings . How and where do we
hold responsibility of the 2 firms? Perkins and Will is a good firm, but
he wished they were local . If we had no one else as good he would give
them heavy weight.
Bill Martiros thought they were very good and feels the concerns can be
addressed. We should keep them on the front burner while we address the
concerns.
Joan said she enjoyed the presentation. A strong firm. The composition of
the whole group - men , women and people of color was important.
Joe thinks they are a very strong firm and the Committee should consider
them. The package of information they gave us is a very helpful tool .
Their presentation showed imagination. They showed lighting, mechanical
systems, the environment inside is important and they can take care of that
in house. They have the capacity to do the job. He does have concerns
about Perkins and Will - how to control that?
Steve said it is one of the strongest partnerships we have seen . Perkins
and Will has national exposure but they are known for their partnerships.
They have to explain the partnership agreement.
Paul asked what sites would we visit?
5
