Paul was impressed with their engineering firm, he knew his business and
knew what we were looking for. We don ' t however, want people standing
around because we bought so much . He is concerned they are over qualified
and more than we want. He is not sure how they would be dealing with the
community.
Peter did not like that they did not bring their Project Manager with them.
They did not know we had selected SMMA, they were just selling their
resume.
Janice said we could really take advantage of and it would be interesting
to work with the people who have the contract for the Edison schools.
Tishman:
Paul thinks they are a very good firm. Dan Tishman is a good speaker with
good ideas. The scope of what we want is a downscale for them. We want
someone who can deal with Mashpee people, life on the Cape is much
different.
Bill Jones would like to make a small contract with Tishman research .
Peter said they have a good relationship with SMMA. He could call Ed
Freneette and ask how he likes them.
Bill Martiros said we like 3 firms , maybe there is a cost factor . Why don 't
we negotiate with them?
Steve explained we can ' t. We have to choose them on their merits . If in
the negotiation of the price it becomes prohibitive, you can then backdown
and pick your next choice.
Merry Sue asked if we will have to defend the need for the project manager
with the Board of Selectmen?
Peter reminded the Committee that Chartwell has a lot of school experience
as well .
Merry Sue noted Chartwell presented to us - a Mashpee presentation . Tishman
presented where we could go if we wanted to.
Peter asked Merry Sue what she thought was lacking at Chartwell compared to
Tishman?
She was impressed with the bulk of material they have on hand - they have
material at their fingertips. A lot of in house capabilities .
Will it be dublicative of SMMA/Perkins and Will ?
Peter fears if we hire too much horse power it will be clash of the titans.
We don 't want to stifle the creativity of the architect.
He thought Tishman was boring , not dynamic . We need someone to get
everyone' s attention and act as a leader, a consensus builder. Mr.
Aitchison is more capable of representing the Committee in a positive
light.
Janice said she feels Chartwell is clawing he wants this job so badly . She
thinks he is small time compared to these other two firms. Tishman is on
another plan . We choose SMMA because we liked their national capabilities.
We don ' t' realize the stumbling blocks we may run into.
Steve Greelish said he will stand down when it comes time to vote because
he was not present at the first round of interviews.
Bill Jones does not think we need the abilities of the big firms . Problems
10
