HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING COMMITTEE
TUESDAY , AUGUST 16 , 1994
TOWN HALL
Present : Peter Dinizio, Steve Greelish , Bill Martiros , Merry Sue Ahlgren ,
Janice Mills , Paul Griffin , Joe Polito
Absent : Michael Pare, Joan Tavares
Also Present : Ian Aitchison , Tom Wren , Dan Solien , Dick Foster , Ed
Frenette, Norris McCloud , Bob Fournier , Dr . Lincoln DeMoura, Greg Taylor ,
Bill Hauck , Tom Fudala
Meeting convened at 4 : 12 p .m.
MINUTES
** Merry Sue made a motion to approve the minutes of August 9 , 1994 .
Janice seconded the motion . All members were in favor. **
COMMITTEE DISCUSSION
- Michael Pare submitted a letter outlining his view of what is needed to
accomplish the technology design and his interpretation of what is under
the scope of services for Childs and SMMA . Steve Greelish , being the other
member of the technology subcommittee , will review it .
- There was a meeting today on the Title V/treatment plant question . Ian ,
Greg Taylor , Elias McQuaid , Mark Pare and Kelly Whalen attended . Ian was
told the Title V system is out , for various reasons . This directive came
from the Selectmen . The options are continue with the plant as proposed or
reduce the flow of the plant , in which case they would have to apply for a
variance from DEP. The savings would be small .
Ian suggested continuing with the design of the proposed plant but
determine, from the other schools who are having problems with their
plants , what those problems are so they don ' t occur with this plant .
Getting a variance involves a lot of effort and a lot of time .
Steve Greelish , who was not present at last weeks meeting , was surprised
the Board of Health considered a conventional system. The size of this
plant was the issue . If you use the DEP formula, it is so inefficient that
the plant does not work properly i .e Sandwich and Nauset . The issue is
what should be the size of the plant. There are fixed costs , but there are
some size differences that could provide cost savings . We want the plant
to run efficiently . We can make an argument with the DEP as to the size of
the plant.
Ian asked if that will take more time to get approvals?
Steve does not think it will add significant time .
Peter asked what gallonage should it be?
That needs review, a cooperative effort by the engineers .
Paul asked if the plumbing department had the true flows , based on the
fixtures that will be in the building?
Ian said it will be about 8 , 000 gallons per day .
What will the total student capacity be with an addition?
Ed said the addition could add a house - 550 more students .
1
