Arehiteds
Engineers
Interior Designers
Planners
l►y\,] Symmes Maini and McKee Associates,Inc.
I
January 9, 1995
Mr. Paul Griffin
Mashpee High School
144 Mimigret Avenue
Mashpee, MA 02649
Re: Mashpee High School
Construction Costs and Value Added SMMA No. 94023
Dear Paul:
We have taken our charge of designing a quality basic high school and advising your committee of
how to best add $1,040,000 in value seriously. In pursuing your charge, our team has thus far
evaluated seven alternative plans, three exterior architectural designs, extensive sewage systems, and
over 100 materials, finishes and systems, exceeding $4,800,000 in value. Before we can successfully
complete this task, we must agree on a few basics.
• A Quality Basic High School according to the State of Massachusetts, includes primarily
academic, arts and athletic teaching stations in a sound structure and some alternatives such as:
accommodation of special soil, acoustic or sewage conditions; contextually responsive exterior
treatments, i.e., decorative brick, sloped roofs, etc.; natural light in all classrooms; interior and
exterior athletic facilities in excess of the minimum; swimming pools; air conditioning;
especially durable or decorative floor, wall or ceiling systems; special energy conservation
systems; special space for technology.
The State guidelines assumes that every community will choose a sound site adjacent to utilities
and will augment the State's funding with additional funds to cover the cost of the items
mentioned above.
Quality can be added to the project by the community by further increasing the budget. Quality
can also be added by the architect by successfully designing the most appropriate alternatives
listed above.
• The cost of a basic high school has escalated according to the State, by a minimum of 4.5%
($905,850). All other sources, such as the cost estimators working on our other eight school
projects, are assuming a 6% increase in cost($1,207,800).
1000 Massachusetts Avenue Cambridge .
