Mr. Whale said evaluate the software, that will dictate the hardware .
Bill asked if the school will need a full time staff person?
Mr. Whale said typically there are 2 : One that understands curriculum and
has a secondary interest in technology and the second person is a "hands
on" technical person, one who could do repairs.
Bill asked if it is better to go outside for service?
Mr. Whale said the first 2 years the installing vendor will warranty the
product.
Paul said some of the software may not be worthwhile purchasing in 1996 .
The Committee should have a plan , assuming they were ready to buy
everything today, based on the technology discussed today , then revise the
list for those items necessary to open the school .
Steve said the teachers will need orientation.
Merry Sue said it sound like about Sept 1 will be the appropriate time to
start evaluating these systems/software. She and Janice will have to look
at them at the convention.
She suggested some of the classrooms will be used by the community before
the students get there and therefore software will have to be purchased-
i .e. office technology.
Mr. Whale explained if you buy it all at the same time, it will all have to
be replaced at the same time. He recommends buying in 3 phases.
Steve said the Committee does have to establish a schedule and must look at
the bonding , in order to stretch the equipment purchases out.
Bill asked if it is cheaper to lease then to buy, because the technology is
changing so fast?
Mr. Whale asked if the school system was using Apple 2Es? They are. He
said those are at least 8 years old. You don' t want to use them but they do
have educational value. He said the average cost to lease pis about $200
per month per computer and you can buy it brand new for $1 ,800 . He does
not know of any district that is leasing .
Joel said he will call Steve and Jeff Whale to talk about the TV studio
requirements.
Steve asked about a video projector in the auditorium, it is an expensive
piece of equipment.
Mr. Whale would recommend the video projector.
Paul suggested the Committee go over the open issues list during the next
few meetings. This Committee will need input for the School Committee and
should set a date for a joint meeting to talk about these issues and get
them resolved .
GROUNDS MAINTENANCE
Dr . DeMoura explained he is developing an RFP for grounds maintenance. It
would probably be logical that this service go out to bid, if approved by
the School Committee. They will compare the cost of privatization vs. in
house. He suggests this Committee set aside a sum of money for equipment,
6
