Dr . Petti asked for clarification about the ballfields, will there be any
soccer or field hockey fields- any fields that can be used for women 's
sports?
Phil reviewed what is in the base bid :
East side of building : 1 baseball field, 1 softball field , 2 rectangular
fields ( in the outfields) that are multi purpose depending on the stripes
and goal posts .
South side: 1 3 1/2 acre rectangular general use field. The general purpose
fields can be used however you like and can change season to season.
There are 3 rectangular fields that can be used simultaneously.
Steve explained the State mandated the base bid include grass fields .
Mike Pietrowski asked if this means a football and soccer game could be
used use the same field by re-scheduling the games? Possibly.
He has seen this done at Nichols College and by November the field is a mud
pit because the grass doesn ' t have time to strengthen itself, it gets all
dug up.
Paul said he is not sure they would use 1 field for everything .
Merry Sue noted if the fields is big enough you can "turn" the field (the
striping) .
Dr. Petti asked for further explanation on the carpeting , presently it is
on the alternate list? That is correct.
She asked if the School Committee may vote to eliminate it?
Paul said if it is less desirable , they can make it a higher alternate.
He said some Committee members feel it provides a good value .
Dr. Petti asked if it is necessary in a classroom?
Merry Sue has carpet in her classroom and loves it. The custodian also
prefers it.
Mr. Furrier said it is less expensive to clean but he has heard complaints
from the teachers . They feels it is hazardous to their health .
Paul said today ' s carpet is not an environmental problem.
Phil explained the carpet specified is good quality which has
antimicrobials within the mix of nylon. Carpet produced today are not a
problem. They "off gas" like every other product but it will happen in a
short period of time.
Joe said it collects dust. You will have to clean it every day.
Peter said this decision is out of the hands of this Committee , it is up to
the School Committee .
Gus Fredricks said he was going over some of the suggested deletions (from
Daedulus list or recommendations ) . The minutes indicated that the bike
racks were eliminated because they cost $1 , 000 each . He reviewed the spec
and then found a similar one for $240 each .
Paul said the $240 is just for a product, the $1 , 000 includes the cost of
digging the hole, cementing it in , etc. The rack has to go through a
subcontractor, to the general contractor , all with markup. It is not as
easy as just comparing to a product on a shelf.
- Plant and Wildlife Assessment Report is complete .
OFF SITE IMPROVEMENTS
SMMA has a letter from VHB with an estimate for construction costs and
3
