■ ■ Limited English Proficiency Program/English Language Learners ■ (Procedures for identifying and screening LEP students) ■ • School principal, guidance counselors, parents/guardians and/or teachers notify the Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment of the admission of any student ■ who they feel may require LEP services. • A certified LEP teacher using the Bilingual Verbal Ability Test (BVAT) instrument to determine if services are warranted will screen each recommended student. The LEP tester will make a recommendation for support service during the day/week. ■ • Once need and amount of recommended services are established for a student, the ■ LEP tutoring will commence. • Scheduling and setting for services will be developed with input from the ■ appropriate school personnel and will be appropriate to age and grade level of the student under review. ■ • Parents/guardians will be notified of the following: ■ • Their child has been recommended for LEP services (with an accompanying "permission to screen" letter). • Their child did or did not qualify for services. • When feasible, all attempts to contact the parent/guardians will be in their ■ primary language. ■ Transitions ■ The Coombs School staff carefully helps children transition into school and from grade level to grade level. The staff assist parents in acclimating children to the preschool ■ setting. Preschoolers at Coombs and in the community are exposed through a Kindergarten Countdown Program for parents and children which provides multiple opportunities of ■ school experiences prior to entering kindergarten. Individual children requiring more ■ programmed transitions per IEPs will be exposed to the kindergarten setting, kindergarten staff, and kindergarten classroom procedures before ending their preschool year. Thus, ■ they will be familiar with kindergarten before officially attending a K program. For students from kindergarten to grade one, there will be opportunities to visit a grade one ■ classroom to get a feel for the next level. Also, a Step Up to First Grade parent night is conducted. All kindergarten parents are invited and encouraged to attend to learn about the ■ grade one requirements, curriculum, instruction, etc. Grade two students will visit ■ Quashnet School several times before transitioning to grade three. Individuals or small groups will be provided even more opportunities than the general class to meet their needs. An educational parent evening will be conducted at the Quashnet School for our grade two ■ parents whose children will be third graders. Guidance personnel from Quashnet School visit every grade two classroom in the Spring to speak with them about their upcoming new ■ school. Coombs second grade staff will ensure good communication between Coombs and ■ Quashnet regarding our children. ■ ■ ■ ■ 48 ■ ■
