■ <br /> ■ <br /> Limited English Proficiency Program/English Language Learners ■ <br /> (Procedures for identifying and screening LEP students) ■ <br /> • School principal, guidance counselors, parents/guardians and/or teachers notify the <br /> Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment of the admission of any student ■ <br /> who they feel may require LEP services. <br /> • A certified LEP teacher using the Bilingual Verbal Ability Test (BVAT) instrument <br /> to determine if services are warranted will screen each recommended student. The <br /> LEP tester will make a recommendation for support service during the day/week. ■ <br /> • Once need and amount of recommended services are established for a student, the ■ <br /> LEP tutoring will commence. <br /> • Scheduling and setting for services will be developed with input from the ■ <br /> appropriate school personnel and will be appropriate to age and grade level of the <br /> student under review. ■ <br /> • Parents/guardians will be notified of the following: ■ <br /> • Their child has been recommended for LEP services <br /> (with an accompanying "permission to screen" letter). <br /> • Their child did or did not qualify for services. <br /> • When feasible, all attempts to contact the parent/guardians will be in their ■ <br /> primary language. <br /> ■ <br /> Transitions ■ <br /> The Coombs School staff carefully helps children transition into school and from grade <br /> level to grade level. The staff assist parents in acclimating children to the preschool ■ <br /> setting. Preschoolers at Coombs and in the community are exposed through a Kindergarten <br /> Countdown Program for parents and children which provides multiple opportunities of ■ <br /> school experiences prior to entering kindergarten. Individual children requiring more ■ <br /> programmed transitions per IEPs will be exposed to the kindergarten setting, kindergarten <br /> staff, and kindergarten classroom procedures before ending their preschool year. Thus, ■ <br /> they will be familiar with kindergarten before officially attending a K program. For <br /> students from kindergarten to grade one, there will be opportunities to visit a grade one ■ <br /> classroom to get a feel for the next level. Also, a Step Up to First Grade parent night is <br /> conducted. All kindergarten parents are invited and encouraged to attend to learn about the ■ <br /> grade one requirements, curriculum, instruction, etc. Grade two students will visit ■ <br /> Quashnet School several times before transitioning to grade three. Individuals or small <br /> groups will be provided even more opportunities than the general class to meet their needs. <br /> An educational parent evening will be conducted at the Quashnet School for our grade two ■ <br /> parents whose children will be third graders. Guidance personnel from Quashnet School <br /> visit every grade two classroom in the Spring to speak with them about their upcoming new ■ <br /> school.
