MEDICATIONS
NO MEDICATIONS ARE TO BE SENT TO SCHOOL WITH THE STUDENT.
THIS INCLUDES ALL OVER-THE-COUNTER MEDICATIONS, INHALERS,
CREAMS, COUGH DROPS OR MEDICATED LOLLYPOPS.
Effective March 26, 1993, the Department of Public Health (DPH) promulgated new
regulations concerning the administration of prescription medications in public and private
schools.
Parents/guardians of students requiring medication, please review the following
regulations:
• Whenever possible, medicinal preparations should be given at home.
• With certain conditions such as epilepsy, diabetes, cystic fibrosis, etc., when
medication must be taken during school hours, the school regulations
require a physician's written order and parent/guardian authorization for
school personnel to supervise the taking of medicine for the condition.
• The medicine must be in its own prescription bottle or its own over-the-
counter bottle with a clear set of written instructions.
• Parents/guardians will supply a week's dosage only or the necessary dosage
for one course of medication. This will be repeated weekly, as necessary,
for students on a continuing medication plan.
• Medications prescribed for three (3) times a day will not be given in
school.
• Medications will not be expected to be sent home every day.
• School personnel are not to assume the responsibility for the administration
of medicine. Any medication must be left in the Health Office and never
taken in the classroom.
• School personnel are not to assume the responsibility for the administration
of medicine by injection except by special circumstances, e.g., anaphylactic
reactions, allergic reactions.
Parents/guardians are required to notify the school nurse regarding their child's medical health
history regarding diabetes, allergies, seizures, etc. This allows the school to develop a health
care plan if necessary. Parents/guardians are also asked to contact the classroom teacher in
writing of any such medical issue and what may be required by the teacher(s) in regards to their
child. This information will remain confidential.
Please notify the school nurse if your child is on a permanent medication at home even if the
school does not have the responsibility of distributing medication during the school day. This
may be important information for the school nurse to monitor for effectiveness of medication,
possible side effects and adverse reactions.
51
