PARENT/GUARDIAN CONFERENCES <br /> School-wide parent/guardian conferences are scheduled in late November or early December of <br /> the school year. The school monthly calendar and notification by the principal will alert <br /> parents/guardians of the set dates. At this time, questions about the student's work, class <br /> assignments, etc. may be discussed. If another conference is necessary, it will be scheduled at a <br /> mutually agreed upon time. Parent/teacher conferences are strongly encouraged. If at any time <br /> parents/guardians have any questions about their children, they should not hesitate to contact the <br /> teacher. <br /> PARENT/GUARDIAN OPEN HOUSE <br /> Open House will be conducted during the first few weeks of the school year. Parents/guardians <br /> are encouraged to meet the teacher(s) and to learn about their child's schedule, curriculum and <br /> instruction, etc. You will receive notification of the date and time shortly after school begins. <br /> HOMEWORK <br /> Because education is a lifelong process which extends beyond the school, it is important that <br /> students recognize that learning occurs in the home and community. <br /> Homework is an essential and important means of teaching the necessary skills of independent <br /> study and learning outside the school. <br /> A broad definition of homework is considered here to include not only written work but also <br /> related activities such as viewing specific television programs, news reporting, recreational <br /> reading, and other activities which are related to classroom work, but which are assigned to be <br /> done at home. Speak to your child's teacher if your child is struggling with homework for an <br /> extended period of time. <br /> REASONS FOR HOMEWORK <br /> • to complete work started in class <br /> • to expand and/or enrich regular class work <br /> • to build interest in reading and learning <br /> • to make up work missed due to absence <br /> • to encourage parent/guardian awareness of student learning <br /> • to provide an opportunity to pursue special interest or ability areas <br /> • to increase learning time <br /> • to build self-discipline <br /> • to skills or organization and an independent approach to learning through research <br /> The following time chart is the minimum homework requirement: <br /> Grade Level Daily Requirement <br /> Kindergarten 15 minutes <br /> Grades 1 and 2 30 minutes <br /> Homework will be assigned on weekends as appropriate. Homework will be considered part of <br /> the student's grade. Teachers will check homework on a regular basis. <br /> Periodically, students may be assigned a long-term project or assignment. Students may <br /> complete such an assignment as quickly or leisurely as they choose. Deadlines for the project or <br /> assignment are, however, expected to be met. Teachers may set grade penalties for late or <br /> missing projects or assignments. <br /> 20 <br />
