SECTION III CONDUCT RULES Staff Conduct Staff/student interactions: • Staff will speak to and treat children and family members respectfully and with dignity. • Classroom discipline will be positive and appropriate for student growth and learning. • Staff will maintain confidentiality regarding their students. Whenever necessary, staff will communicate concerns to parents/guardians in an effective and timely manner. • Staff will be sensitive in their interactions with students and their families. School is a place where children come for an education. Good order and discipline help students to learn and to adjust to life, free from the distractions, frictions and disturbances which would interfere with their education. We work cooperatively with parents/guardians in helping children develop responsible behavior, courtesy toward others, and a community spirit. We do not call parents/guardians over every minor transgression. When we do call, it is for something we consider serious in nature and for which we must enlist their assistance. Our school rules are simple and easily understood by the children. The following list is a guideline for teachers and administrators in dealing with discipline problems. It also makes students and parents/guardians aware of the potential consequences of any negative behavior. Section 310 of Massachusetts Chapter 766 will be adhered to when disciplining students on an IEP(Individualized Educational Plan). For further clarification, please refer to the Mashpee School Committee Policy on Student Conduct. Student Conduct Our school's rules are developed with four guiding principles for responsible behavior. They are known as"Cocoa's Fab Four". • Safety • Respect • Responsibility • Ready to Learn These guidelines help us to understand that: • People are not for hitting or hurting. • We need to find ways of dealing with angry feelings so that we are able to keep our hands, feet and objects to ourselves. • Rude,hurtful language is unacceptable. • The school is our home. Its property should be treated respectfully and carefully. Our personal property will be safe in school as well if we also respect each others' belongings. • It is important not to interfere with leaming for ourselves and others by distracting or disturbing the teacher during a lesson. • Positive and courteous behavior means that we will listen and participate at the appropriate times. We should make every effort to learn as much as possible every day. 28
