SCHOOL INSURANCE As a service to parents/guardians, a voluntary Student Accident Insurance program is offered. It is r available at the lowest possible premium. Accidents and injuries do happen, and we encourage parents/guardians to think seriously about this service. Enrollment forms will be distributed by the homeroom teacher soon after the opening day of school. WELLNESS POLICY Mashpee Public School District is committed to providing school environments that promote and protect children's and adults' health, well-being and ability to learn by supporting healthy eating and physical activity. All students shall strive to possess the knowledge and skills to make nutritious food choices and appropriate physical activity choices for a life time. This policy will be enforced in all schools. It must be noted that the district is a peanut-free provider. The Kenneth C. Coombs School Wellness Policy is also established as a result of research that clearly proves good nutrition and physical exercise is linked to better academic performance; therefore, we are committed to a learning environment that: • Stresses eating a healthy breakfast to start each day; • Encourages fruit, vegetable and whole grain snacks, (List provided for parents); • Provides ample hand-washing opportunities throughout the school day; • Allows students to use water bottles to maintain hydration; • Models healthy food choices; • Offers a health education program; • Provides instruction in nutrition and encourages healthy physical activities; • Provides a school lunch program consistent with the Wellness Policy guidelines; • Complies with food safety requirements; • Provides staff monitored recreational activities that promote moderate, physical activity during all outdoor and indoor recess times; • Provides to the extent possible, scheduled lunch before recess to ensure hand-washing prior to lunch; • Incorporates opportunity for physical activity in the classroom with other subject areas; • Conducts nutrition education activities that involve students, staff, parents and the community; • Provides information for parents to help them incorporate physical activity into their family's daily routine; • Provides staff wellness programs; • Protects children with food allergies; • Encourages healthy choices for birthday and classroom celebrations; • Encourages alternatives to using food as a reward. The Mashpee School District urges school educators, administrators and School Committee officials to create healthy school environments by adopting sound nutrition and education policies. These policies are developed to protect the health of Mashpee's school children. The district acknowledges the vital need to provide a school environment that models health promotion and takes action to combat the rising health risks in children. Together with parents/guardians our children will be provided with the best possible health care. 56
