1991 SHELLFISH MAPS <br /> The following numbers and descriptive paragraphs are for you to refer to so that you may determine the present <br /> classification status of a particular shellfishing area. The large number in the left margin refers to a number on the <br /> maps of Waquoit and/or Popponesset Bay . The short narrative tells you the classification status of the area and a <br /> detailed description of the area (for legal purposes). It is particularly important for you to be aware of the areas <br /> designated as cortarrsnation areas and areas planted with contaminated shellfish. Severe legal penalties can be <br /> inflicted on p:.ople found fishing in these areas, as well as the possibility of contracting an illness from consuming <br /> shellfish from that area. If you have any questions, call the shellfish department at 539-1439 and I will answer <br /> any questions you might have. <br /> Contaminated Shellfish Area - All Shellfishing is PROHIBITED in the following areas until <br /> further notice: <br /> Popponesset Bay <br /> Mashpee River - The waters and flats and all tributaries thereto of the Mashpee River in the Town of <br /> Mashpee, north of a line drawn west for a distance of 90 meters from the orange marker located at "Orsini <br /> Beach" to an orange marker on the west shore of the Mashpee River. <br /> Santuit River/Shoestring Bay-The waters and flats and tributaries of Shoestring Bay and Santuit River in <br /> the Towns of Mashpee and Barnstable north of a line drawn from the "NO SHELLFISHING" sign at the <br /> pier at the end of Simons Narrows Road in Mashpee, to the "NO SHELLFISHING" sign at the Town <br /> way to the water off Santuit Road in Barnstable. <br /> Seasonal Contaminated Shellfish Area - All shellfishing is PROHIBITED in the following area <br /> from May 1 through November 1, (with possible extension) until further notice: <br /> 2 Popponesset Bay <br /> Mashpee River - The waters and flats and all tributaries thereto of the Mashpee River in the Town of <br /> Mashpee south of a line drawn from the orange marker at "Orsini Beach" west across the river for 90 <br /> meters to the orange marker on the west shore, then in a southerly direction along the high water mark to <br /> the tip of Punkhom Point, then in a northeasterly direction to the southwest tip of Gooseberry Island, then <br /> across the mouth of the Mashpee River to a sign on the southern tip of Mashpee Neck, then back along the <br /> high water mark to the point of origin at the sign at Orsini Beach. <br /> Private Shellfish Grant Areas - Closed to All Public Shellfishing <br /> 3 These areas have been privately leased to individuals for the purpose of culturing shellfish. These areas <br /> will have their boundary lines marked with large yellow inflatable buoys marked "Private Shellfish Grant <br /> # ", and/or signs on the adjacent shoreline marked in a similar manner. <br /> Contaminated Shellfish Transplant Area - All shellfishing except for the taking of scallops <br /> during the appropriate season is PROHIBITED until further notice in the following areas: <br /> 4 Popponesset Bay <br /> The waters and flats and all tributaries thereto enclosed by a line drawn from the west end of the <br /> Popponesset Island Bridge at the high water mark on the northern side along the high water mark in a <br /> northerly direction to the sign on the beach in front of 199 Daniels Island Road, then along a line drawn <br /> from that sign across in a southerly direction to the sign placed on the northern tip of Popponesset Island, <br />
