COATES 11
DIRECTORv ' rC
x x 727-3193 I
449 Route 6A
I
East Sandwich, MA 02537
I.
May 11, 1983 I
Board of Selectmen
Town of Mashpee - `y yeX f
Mashpee, MA 02649
Gentlemen: - It
Under authority of Chapter 130, Section 57 of the Massachusetts
General Laws, an on-site inspection of a proposed 3.3 acre shellfish
grant requested by Mr. Richard Cook was conducted on May 6, 1983.
Mr. Cook assisted Division personnel in the survey.
The proposed grant, located. in Ockway Bay, includes both the
intertidal and subtidal zones. The bottom, in the intertidal zone is
composed of sand and clay, while the subtidal zone is quite soft and
muddy. Sixty samples were randomly taken to ensure an unbiased
assessment of shellfish abundance. Data indicates a density of 0.10
quahog/ft2 exists in the area. Oyster density was estimated at 2.00
oyster/sq. meter throughout the shallow section of the grant. A
shallow creek, which constitutes the eastern boundary of the grant,
contained a substantial concentration of soft-shell clams. However,
the creek is located outside of the proposed grant.
As a result of our inspection, it is my opinion that license
and operation of the proposed grant under provision of Section 57
would cause no substantial adverse effect on the natural resources
of Mashpee.
Sincerely,
FJG:EB (Assis
nk Germano
CC to: J.
