Town of Mashpee Department of Pu6Cic Works j
J
350 Meetingfwuse Road
Mashpee, Massachusetts 02649
7efephone-(508)539-1420
FaX-(508)539-3894 e
MEMORANDUM
To: The Board of Selectmen
From: Greg Taylor, Director DPVCI
w
Date: January 13, 2004h;
Re: Town Meeting Article
In order to reduce confusion:and misrepresentation of the public's rights, the following
article is requested by the Department of Public Works: t
To see if the Town will vote to authorize the Selectmen to prepare an ordinance to: ,
Require signage of new or existing streets giving a name to a traveled way that is a ''4
driveway, because it does not have a defined right-of-way, shall clearly indicate on an
attached placard in 1 inch letters "Private Driveway."
A placard indicating"Private Driveway" shall be attached to the top of signage
indicating a name given to a driveway. A fine of$50.00 a day shall be assessed for all
signs not having a placard after December 1, 2004.
Explanation:
When the public sees a street sign posted on a traveled way, they assume that the road is ,
public or private, and has a status that has benefits attributed to such roads. Driveways
are not subject to emergency repairs or snow and ice treatment by the Town of Mashpee.
There is no oversight by the Town of Mashpee related to curb cuts or utility openings on
"Private Driveways." Driveways can be closed or changed at the whim of the owner. By
indicating"Private Driveway," we alert the public that there is something unique about
the conditions at hand.
