Labute, <br /> My choice of May 11, as the date of my resignation, was done <br /> with deliberation to maintain continuity of this office with three <br /> Selectmen. I was of the opinion that this date would allow sucessor <br /> candidates ample notice and time. to circulate nomination papers. <br /> The election is scheduled for May 12 , and an orderly transition would <br /> have taken place. <br /> However, I have been advised that holding to the May 11 date <br /> of resignation would prevent anyone from circulating nomination papers <br /> until that date as they may not be circulated until the date of actual <br /> vacancy of the office. <br /> Therefore, after consulting with Town Counsel on proper proceedure, <br /> I will advise the Town Clerk, in writing, of a change in resignation <br /> date to March 29 , 1984. i <br /> This date fulfills the legal requirements in allowing candidates <br /> not less than one week, to learn of the vacancy and circulate nomina- <br /> tion papers, for submittal to the Registrars by the deadline of 5 :00 <br /> p.m. , April 6 , 1984 . <br /> o it further eliminates the $500-$700 cost and necessity of holding <br /> a special election, which could not have been .held until sometime in <br /> July. <br /> C 3Jd 11 , <br /> Chester A.
