2
Board of Selectmen
Minutes
December 18, 2000
APPOINTMENTS AND HEARINGS:
Exit Interview—Melanson Heath& Company (continued)
The financial statement and management letter was reviewed.
Recommended internal controls and efficiencies were discussed. It was
noted that the Treasurer/Tax Collector's Office is installing a new
computer system. The issue of automation should be addressed at this
time. Timeliness in the School Department with regards to school vendor
payments has improved over the past few months. As a result, potential
budget problems are more readily identified.
Mr. Melanson recommended that the monthly posting procedures of the
Fire Department be improved to track detailed ambulance receivables as it
is difficult to prove balances between the two departments.
In closing, Mr. Melanson indicated that his firm would assist with the
implementation of the GASB 34, which begins, in fiscal year 2003. The
new process will change the way financial records appear and will include
the aspect of fixed assets'.
OLD BUSINESS:
DiMaggio Status Report:
Fire Chief George Baker updated the Selectmen on the status of the
hazardous materials clean up at the DiMaggio Service Station, 135 Main
Street, Mashpee. Bill Hauck, Inspector of Buildings was also present for
discussion.
r
Chief Baker indicated that Mr. DiMaggio employed the services of a
licensed professional to manage the clean up process. In follow up,
representatives from the Department of Environmental Protection(DEP)
and Board of Health accompanied the Fire Chief on a recent site visit.
Mr. Baker stated that all hazardous issues are in compliance or there is a
plan for such, with the exception of the current storage of waste oil.
Inspection for this compliance will take place the first week in January. A
follow up of the subject site will be conducted in April.
i
