Minutes of Meeting of
Mashpee Design Review Committee
Tuesday, October 17, 2017
Mashpee Town Hall Waquoit Meeting Room
Committee Members Present: Joseph Cummings, Joshua Spencer, Michael
Mendoza, and William Blaisdell (substituting for Jonathan Furbush).
Absent: Jonathan Furbush, and Miles Peters.
Michael Mendoza called the meeting to order at 5:37 a.m.
Project Address, 680 Falmouth Rd., Unit#2
Business name: Adam S. Avratin, Attorney-at Law
Owner/Agent: Adam S. Avratin
Representative: Adam S. Avratin
Request: Sign
Adam Avratin appeared and said he apologized because the proposed sign is
already up. He said the landlord had approved the sign and gave him authority
to install it. Mr. Avratin said he is an attorney and he ought to have known better
and that is why he apologized. He said it was not his intent to circumvent the
process, but rather, it was due to his lack of knowledge. He said the sign is
87X30, which he believes is under the 20 square feet prescribed under the
Bylaw.
Mr. Avratin said the sign was put up by a professional installer. The sign is not
illuminated. Sign is white and black. He said the sign is vinyl that is all white with
a decal on it.
Joe Cummings noted that the sign seems to be much larger than the other signs
on that building. Mr. Avratin said he went to the sign designer who made all the
signs for the building. Joe Cummings advised that the limit is 10% of the building
outside calculations.
Mike Mendoza advised that the Committee needs to know Mr. Avratin's building
area in order to determine that the sign doesn't exceed 5% of that area. Mike
said if applicant exceeds that 5%, then he may have to go to the Zoning Board of
Appeals.
Bill Blaisdell commented that he has the same question as to whether or not this
sign exceeds the 5% of applicant's building front area.
Joshua Spencer asked why applicant used plastic when the others had used
wooden sign. Mr. Avratin responded that he went with the sign the designer
recommended.
