TOWN of WL%PEE5, BOARD of HEALTH, PEETING, NOVEMBER 24, X985
Mr. Buckingham speaking-, to provide water to the area, In the m nt im e, I would assurne,, until we
get some res u l is.f ra m this well, this well will be much deeper than anything that's up there,, it's
Ofi ng down to 125' be 1 ow water table and it will be sap p led at 5 points a 1 ong that d i stance, so
ey feel they should be able to intercept anything at whatever depth it's at. They can't stop It,
what they will do thea i s -to pay for the introduction of a town water , supply. This well will have
five lure l s, starting at about 15' feet below the top of the nater table or, ten feet below going
dawn to 1251 below the water table. They say they t bink this will be adequate, they are moving
over into the Bri angaod area; there will be fri ve monitoring wells, they feel if someth l ng is coming
into the Br i a rwood area it is corp i ng from the fire fighting area. They are proposing four,, f i ire
level wells in addition, no Tritorn will have three single tap wells plus this one four level well.
. Brian od:iwill have five multi level wells in a line when they fel it will be able to intersect
everything. They are acknowledging the fact that the three houses or four houses that we have
picked up do show a sign, their concern is that that could get higher or it could get 1mr, that's
the next. priority area and whati they have found so far is that there is a transfer of water from,
AshLmt Pond to John's Pond. They feel that if one of t hese plumes does come dawn under the we 1 l s
in the Briar cod area and do surface into Ashumet Pond or John's Pond that there's no chance that
those p-lumes contam i nate the ponds because the pro l at i 1 es ti k i 1 l boil off and the quantity of water
in those ponds and the depth of water in those ponds is sufficient to dilute to where it becomes
no mnace. The Chair west i oned for how long and whose idea- of rxo menace. W. Buckingham: th i s
is one of the things that we tried to pin,,thm dorm on, ev i dent 1 this is going to be continuing
mnitoring prog rare, it's not go i rig to.shop i n-one or two.years or three ,years it's going to keep
on and uSGS is gol n to i nvo 1 d in it,, they will be directly the wells' locations and they nay be
responsible for the type of well that's put in arxJ they-will make sure that..---- it is the depth'i..'that
it is supposed t ,:#hey are go i ung to continue with more wee l l information in setting up a better un-
derstanding of the hydrology of the area and it is not going -to stop, it's Sgaing do coat i n ue.
They've entirely discarded any..p s s i b i 1 i ty that the contamination coin l d be cleansed frim the water.,,
from t he aquifer, they feel it's.much--too widespread.,- that -it isn't in a pool, that it is thoroughly
418 ss imi l ated. wherever it is and there's no way of taking it out. The Agent west i an d if they
U. S. Govenv ent were go i ng to pay for the water system into Briar .cod...... it. Buckingham said
that Briarood- is a question, that' something that they're going to have to come up with bet weer
now and the target date was next Deer. M, if their findings show that it is cap i n f rum the
Base they will do the same as with Falmouth and provide the cost of,the water supply to that area.
Forget, T itown Circle because they are maintaining, 1 don't knorw what action the Selectmen as Water
Com i s i overs and their advisors, SFR, is going to give them on i t, it see m& to rre from the way
that SEA was reacting, that they were satisfied with what was going on but they still had this reser-
vation with what was going on about not supplying Tritorn and what not because it seems to w what
they're saying to the people in Tritown is 'take our woad for it, it's alright and if isn't alright
we'll warn ,you in time, it's up to ;you whether ,you want to take town water or continue using your
awn we 11. They're slut for the.town`s ooperat i on foir:.wi 1 i fforTnati ori and what not. The Cha i r
stated that they s l am the door in your farce and then they ask for cooperation. The Agent to the
Clerk, ',you've worked with them for-days and days and days Mr. Buckingham said they'rye acknow-
1 edg i ng that, l think they were d i rct i i t mare-to SEA and Duf res ne-den ry, in their work with
the Water Quality omission, making sum that, than doesn't dry up. One of the concerns that de-
-Avelped up here was than the possibility that if there was atom well dawn in the .humet icer arrea,
the other side of 151 that could be possibly used to draw 5 million gallons per day, would this have
any influence up there. 'They claim that after talking with the experts at USGS that earn that type
of a draw could not pull nay type of p1uTe past Johns Pond, that's what they said. The next area
they will be concentrating on will be BriarwxxJ, if .I can look at it, describe it to ,you that way.
row with extreme concentration, there's collateral study-and it will deepen if they find anything
to deepen it with, g oing to the East of that, which would put it in the area of g oing beyond Johns
Pond, it would- be on the Coast Guard Beach side The Chair noted that would pint it in the'Quashnet
i ver area yes, Quashnet Valley,, that's the next area that they're going to study,, they don r t feel
at this time there is that much of an indication f the 17 known places on the Base when comm i nants
e been spilled. They don't think that Quashnet Valley is draining any of those areas but they will
investigating. So what it amounts to is plus the wells that they already have in place which are
a 1 l single we l 1 s, they'll be having five more multi-level wells to monitor that area, what they're
talking about is than they'll be spending the time and the well search to follow this until if cones
out into the Bay. A multi-level we 1 l is f i e wel1 s in one, real ly., ,you put dawn a big we 11 shaft
