an incident report (see Appendix A). Incident Reporting Forms will be available for all staff and
students and a copy will be placed on the website.
Staff members are not limited in their authority to respond to behavioral or disciplinary incidents
consistent with school or district policies for behavior management and discipline.
Students or parents/guardians may report an incident to any staff member but may be brought to any
staff member who will then forward the report to the principal. The report may be anonymous;
however,no disciplinary action will be brought forth based solely on an anonymous report. This does
not mean an investigation will not be launched.Prior to any investigation, the principal will make sure
the school is safe for the target. This may be done by creating a personal safety plan(pre-determining
seating arrangements on the bus or in the lunch room for example). The principal will take additional
steps as necessary to promote safety during the course of and after the investigation.
Parents/guardians will be notified when bullying or retaliation has occurred. The notification will
happen promptly for both the target and the aggressor and will include details of the incident. If the
report involves students from another school district, the principal will notify that district so that
school may take appropriate action. When necessary, it is possible that law enforcement will also be
notified of the incident.
Steps to investigation:
1. Report of bullying is made to a teacher or other staff member and forwarded on to the
principal.
2. An incident report must be filled out by staff or principal.
3. Principal (or his/her designee) will interview target, aggressor, bystander(s), staff,
parents/guardians, witnesses, and any others as necessary.
4. Confidentiality will be maintained during the investigative process to the extent practicable.
5. The principal will remind both the target and the aggressor that retaliation is strictly prohibited.
6. Determinations will be based on facts and circumstances. The principal or his/her designee will
decide what remedial, responsive, or disciplinary action(if any) is necessary.
7. Phone calls will be made to the appropriate parties by the end of the work day.
Mashpee Public Schools operate under the belief that bullying maybe prevented if students are taught
appropriate and acceptable emotional responses. The district's goal is to enhance the environment of
all the schools and school-related events by promoting safety and respect.
Collaboration with Families
Another goal of the district is to increase the capacity to prevent and respond to bullying by
collaborating with students' families. By informing parents/guardians how they can reinforce the
curricula at home, what the dynamics of bullying entail, and the dangers associated with cyber-
bullying and social networking, the district becomes partners with the families.Educational programs
such as Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center (MARC), Guiding Good Choices, and anti-
bullying programs through the District Attorney's office have been and will continue to be offered to
parents.
The Bullying Intervention and Prevention Plan for Mashpee will be placed on the district's website for
27
