I have received training from staff of the Massachusetts Library System, which will allow us to
train other Cape librarians to use the online reading programs. On March 21, we will co-lead a
four hour workshop at the Eldredge Library in Chatham, and will continue to provide support to
other libraries as necessary in the months leading up to the kick-off in June.
Note: At our training session we were informed that the library would not receive the $3000.00
to use for this summer's reading program. It will be available for use next summer's programs.
I have also spoken with Dave Delvecchio of the town's IT department to explore ways for the
library to secure monitors or screens that will allow us to use the gaming consoles that were
purchased with grant funds. In order to use the consoles to run a gaming night, we would need
multiple projectors and screens, television sets, or some type of monitor which would be
compatible with the consoles configuration. I plan to talk to David further about this last
option. He indicated to me that he would be able to purchase the necessary monitors for the
library.
Before her retirement, Helen approved the creation of a Mashpee Library Teen Facebook page
and provided me with access to the MPL email account to use in registering the site. I have
created the page, but have not made it live at this point. I am working on some suggested
guidelines and policies for its use, which I think should be in place before I move forward. I
hope to have a document for your review before the next board meeting.
I am very excited, and eager to move forward with the teen services, but I have been moving
forward slowly in order to allow time for the staffing issues to be addressed. I don't want to
over extend the staff or library resources, or move too quickly on initiatives that will then have
to be shelved due to lack of staffing.
Barbara Notarius has also expressed an interest in writing a piece about the new teen services
in the library newsletter. I wanted to first touch base and perhaps get some feedback from the
board of trustees about the advisability of running an article promoting new services at a time
when the staffing situation is in the spotlight?
