Mashpee Public Library
P.O. Box 657
Mashpee MA 02649
Circulation in June was 15,047 items compared to 12,966 last June. Circulation for the fiscal year ending
June 30 was 172,258 items, which established Mashpee as the third busiest library in the CLAMS system
behind only Falmouth and Harwich, and far exceeded last year's total of 122,467 items circulated. We
are seeing a daily increase in business as the summer season progresses, and the staff is doing a
remarkable job of maintaining high levels of service.
The majority of the month was dedicated to preparation for the end of the fiscal year. I attended the
CLAMS annual membership meeting along with the other regional library directors and was very
impressed with the work and organization of the CLAMS staff and the many committees that carry out
various functions on behalf of the collective. I volunteered to serve on a newly formed "Digital Content"
committee, which will help determine the networks future plans for deploying digital content:
downloadable Ebooks and audiobooks. This new format represents an opportunity to offer new
services to our patrons and I believe participation on the committee will provide a valuable educational
opportunity.
The annual ARIS report, which is required by the state, is due in August. I attend a training session at the
Harwich Library to learn the process for completing the reports online. During the next month we will
gather data on circulation, collections, and patron use of the facility and compile it for submission to the
Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. Participation in this process is critical in order to qualify
for State Aid funding. The entire staff will work on gathering statistics for this effort.
I was fortunate to attend the American Libraries Association annual conference in New Orleans, and
have returned with many new ideas, resources, and contacts. I was also able to connect with some of
our vendors and preview upgraded services and enhancements to their products. I met with
representatives from several companies who manufacture security gates and was able to view and take
pictures of their newest models. I was also able to meet with our local 3M rep and arrange a session for
training on the use of the inventory wand, which originally came with our RFID system. I will work with
two technicians on July 19 and will set up the system so that we will be able to monitor inventory levels,
and make note of any significant losses in the collection.
While at the conference I attended programs on the topics of fundraising, Ebooks, technology, strategic
planning, and marketing and branding of libraries. I hope to put this knowledge to good use in the
coming months.
We are currently beginning the Strategic Planning process and Jack and I have both been recruiting
individuals for the Planning Committee. I hope to have the roster in place by the end of the week and
hold a first meeting in the very near future.
