MA SHPEE SCHOOL COMMITTEE -- REGULAR MEETING SEPTEMBER 311997 PAGE 13 9.3 Iiih School Late Buses — Dr. I e1 oura said the high school has requested five after-school routes for the 1997-1998 school year (the same as last year). This will result in three additional routes that must be added to the contract. The cost would be between $2,000- 3,000. Dr. DeMoura recommended these routes begin September 16, 1997 and continuing with last gear-s schedule. Motion rade by Mr. Paxton, seconded by Ms. Macdonald, to approve the Superintendent's recommendation. NOTE: Unanimous 9.4 Shannon Lee Proposal -- Discussed earlier in the meeting. .5 Special Education — 'Titin-In Students — Dr. Ielura briefly outlined the Committee on the possibility of tuitionin -in students from other school districts. Dr. IeMoura suggested for ulating a committee to discuss issues of inclusion., the establishment of criteria for students from from out-of-district as well as and other types of issues. Criteria would be brought back to the School Committee for their approval. Special Education Director Grace Darr addressed the School Committee'explaining the concept of tuitionin. -in" students stating we currently tuition out to other districts. Mrs. Cook asked why is this idea not a School Choice issue? Dr. I eM ura answered that special education programs do not follow School Choice mandates. Mrs. Mills asked about utilizing the Collaborative? Mrs. Day explained that public schools offer other programs that the Collaborative does not, and that the Collaborative works mainly with students who have very restricted reeds. Mr. Paxton suggested researching a revolving account for this program and at the same time investigate its cost effectiveness. The establishment of a revolving account would require Town Meeting approval.
