Board of selectmen <br /> Minutes <br /> January 14, 2002 <br /> COMMUNICATIONS AND CORRESPONDENCE: <br /> Correspondence from Hale & Dom <br /> Correspondence was received from Hale & Irr dated January 9, 2002 <br /> relative to natters affecting the 1la.shpee wapanoag Indian Tribal <br /> Council. In particular,the pending Petition for Recognition with the <br /> Department of Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs, to be a federally <br /> recognized Tribe. <br /> Hale & I orr has advised the Town of Mashpee to.defer any actions until <br /> the Federal Government has made an unequivocal decision. It was noted <br /> that the Federal Government has o days from the date of December 21, <br /> 2001 to appeal the order requiring the BIA to place the Petition for <br /> Recognition on active consideration. <br /> OLD BURNESS: <br /> Windmill Discussion; <br /> The Army Corps of Engineers is the noted lead agency conducting review <br /> of the proposal brought forth by Cape wind Associates to build an <br /> offshore wind farm energy generation project in Nantucket.Sound. <br /> The windmill farm proposed to be located In the waters referred to as the <br /> Horseshoe Shoal area,would be the first wind-generated electricity project <br /> in the United States. The proposed farm would consist of 170 windmills, <br /> each approximately 270 feet high. <br /> The Army Corps of Engineers will be conducting a full scale <br /> { environmental impact review. The Selectmen m opposition, agreed to <br /> formally comment on the natter. For disclosure, the Board received <br /> letters of opposition from the wampanoag Indian Tribal Council and <br /> 1lashpee Fisherman's Association. <br />
