DEC 6, 1982
MH
MASHPEE FIREDEPARTM SELECTMEWS
MA HPE , MASS. 02649 OFFICE 477-0411
December 6r 1982
To: Honorable Board of Selectmen
FROM: Chief James J. Priestly
SUBJECT: Ambulance Bid Recommendation
It is the recommendation of this department that the bid
for an ambulance from E.v.F* , Incorporated be seriously con-
sidered by the Board of Selectmen for the reasons stated be-
low.
Experience with our present unit weighed heavily in our
comparisons with the other units , It- was felt that our pres-
ent ambulance was meeting the needs of the fire service and
the townspeople in performance, utility, and repairs . Further,
a duplicate unit would double the life of both units. By fully
depreciating the chassis in approximately five gears and the
guaranteed modular patient compartment in approximately item
years, we have essentially doubled the life of each unit at
one half the cost. The actual cost to the taxpayers would be
measurably less over an extended period of time because the
nodular patient compartment could be transferred from one
chassis to the other rather than purchasing a complete new
unit.
The conc pt of standardizing.. equipment to make less do
more, as outlined at the Town Meeting on October 27, 1982 , i
the basis for our decision. For example', by replacing the
present chassis in 1985 we can -project that the whole ambu-
lance need not be replaced until. 1990, whil_e protecting the
department from the high cost of major repairs4b
Again, by acquiring a second ambulance in 1983 and re-
placing its chassis in five years, our ambulance needs should
be satisfied until 1993 . The modular patient compartment is
guaranteed for -ten years, thereby extending the life of these
units well into the future.
N ll the specifications received by the Fire Department
were reviewed for each bid made. An analysis and evaluation
was made to see whether they would meet the needs of this de-
partment, and serve the best interest of the Town,
