Appendix A / G.O. Re: Performance <br /> Appraisal System for Police Sergeant <br /> and Regular Full—Time Police Officers <br /> SERGEANT <br /> A. SUMMARY <br /> A Sergeant occupies the first level of supervision In the Department. His <br /> primary responsibility is exacting the proper performance of police duty <br /> from the officers assigned to duty within the areas subject to his super-- <br /> Vision. <br /> The Sergeant is charged with ensuring compliance with the Department's <br /> regulations. He handles and records in writing all infractions,reports <br /> violations to his superior, as deemed necessary, when infractions are of <br /> a D turn-requiring more than first line supervisors attention. He shall <br /> thoroughly acquaint himself with the duties of patrol officers and shall <br /> assist and instruct the ,officers under his supervision in the proper dis— <br /> charge of their duties. <br /> He shall be responsible for the proficiency, discipline, conduct, appearance <br /> and strict attention to duty of all officers under his supervision. <br /> B. GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES <br /> •It is the duty and responsibility of a Sergeant to: . <br /> 1. Supervise police officers assigned to his command. <br /> a. Calls roll at the beginning of a shift and inspects police officers <br /> appearance. <br /> t <br /> b. Schedules subordinates' daily activities. <br /> c. Patrols in patrol vehicle observing, supervising and instructing <br /> subordinates as needed. <br /> 2. Be fully familiar with the current Departmental rules, policies, pro— <br /> cedures and developments in the law that affect him and members under <br /> his supervision. <br /> 3. Review the performance of officers under his supervision on a regular <br /> basis to determine whether they are properly, effectively and consistently <br /> carrying out their police duties. <br /> 4. Ensure that when the police performance of an officer under his command <br /> is unsatisfactory, measures are taken through encouragement, explanation, <br /> referral to his superior officer or other means consistent with Depart— <br /> mental policy to see that the officer's future conduct is up to standard. <br /> PAGE 1 or 3 <br />
