SCHOOL-,TORN RELATIONSHIPS
PROPOSAL:Hold a full-day meeting with representatives of the Town of Mashpee
Board of Selectmen,Finance Committee and School Committee, including the Town
Manager and Superintendent of Schools
OBJECTIVE: Move our relationship to a place where the town and school department
can work smoothly and effectively in partnership, with shared goals and mutual
understanding and support
The purpose of this meeting would be to:
Spend time discussing how and whir the significant disagreements exist between
hese organizations
)O- Put in place operating procedures and written agreements that lead to a greater
degree of cooperation and harmony
TTEN NC : 'dotal attendance would be 8 people, as follows: Two selectmen, two
school committee members and two representatives from the finance committee would
participate in the meeting. We would invite the Town Manager and Superintendent of
Schools. Individuals who attend the meeting would report back to the larger organization
on results achieved.
i
UGPRI-V T' : We have checked with the Attorney General's office as to whether
a meeting such as this can be conducted as a private workshop. The answer is that it
cannot. Any such meeting will therefore need to be conducted in an open, posted session.
MEETING LEADERSHIP: I am recommending that we engage an organization
development leadership training consultant to organize the agenda and meeting process,
and to facilitate the group during its discussions. While this night cost some money the
cost of the doing nothing should be unacceptable.
ACCOUNTABILITY FOR RESULTS: Shared by the Chairman of the Board o
Selectmen and the Chairman of the School Committee
COST ESTIMA TE.- $1500- 3 days of consulting time at$500 per day (day of interviews
and preparation; day to conduct the meeting; day to summarize and write up agreements).
The proposal would ask that each of the organizations involved share in the cost on a pro-
rata basis so that no one budget center tools the entire cost.
