Town O `Mash ee a
16 Great Neck Road North
Mashpee, Massachusetts 02649
Telephone - (508)539-1438
September 12, 2018
MASHPEE HISTORICAL COMMISSION
Minutes of Meeting — October 25, 2018
The Mashpee Historical Commission meeting was called to order by Ava Costello,
Chair, at 4:38 pm..
Commissioners Present: Ava Costello, Richard DeSorgher, Brian Hyde, Nancy
Soderberg and Joan Tavares-Avant.
Commissioner not Present: Rosemary Burns Love
Brian moved to approve the minutes from our Meeting on September 6, 2018. The
motion was seconded by Ava.
Ava presented a letter of interest to join the Mashpee Historical Commission by Brian
Weeden. We decided to postpone deciding on this matter and to bring it up, and
perhaps any others from other applicants, at our next scheduled meeting.
Ava presented a letter of support written to Michael Talbot, Talbot Ecological Landcare,
re his new plans for the Mashpee Community Gardens. Richard moved to approve the
motion to approve sending our letter, and Nancy seconded the motion. Joan abstained.
Ava brought up for discussion the CPC request for us to specify what might be in our
plans for CPC funding over the next 1 year, 3 years, and 10 years. Richard expressed
a concern for historic preservation for the Parsonage. We had addressed this concern
with David Weeded at our meeting last December 2017, and Joan suggested that we
check with him to find out what progress he has made in securing grants or other
funding to restore the building. We should also consider needs for the Indian Museum.
Richard presented his Mashpee Historical Preservation Award recommending that it be
established and presented annually. He proposed that we nominate Earl Mills, and he
stated several reasons for his recommendation, especially for Earl's role in helping Ava
with the writing of the historical signs that they have been working on for the past two
years. Richard moved that we vote on his recommendation, and Joan seconded the
motion. We voted unanimously to approve the motion and to approve Earl to be the first
recipient of our Historic Preservation Award.
