SIMPLE MATH
DETERMINING RESULTS
STAGE ONE IMPACT MASHPEE SEWER SYSTEM
This is a simple exercise to determine what the result woud be for Mashpee to upgrade existing plants
and build new plants to service the high density portion of the town(assuming 50%of total residents)
This exercise also assumes upgraded and new plants would yeild .003 Mg N/L waste water Vs.an average
of.035 Mg N/L from present systems.
Waste Water Assumptions:
10,000 homes with 2.5 persons producing 125 gallons of waste water per day
35 Mg N/L-35 milligrams of Nitrogen in that waste water(averaging systems)
Systems in use-8500 Title 5,1200 on private,and 300 with I/A
Nitrogen compounds in Today's waste water from 10,000 homes:
1,250,000 gallons per day containing.035 Mg N/L is as follows:
1,250,000(365 days)(3.8 L/gal.)(.035 Mg N/L)/(448 g/lb.)=135,780 pounds per year
Stage one 50%of town(high density areas)with Upgraded existing plants and new capacity at.003 Gr N/L
625,000 gallons per day containing.003 Mg N/L is as follows:
625,000 G(365 days)(3.8 L/G)(.003 Mg N/L)/(448 g/lb.)=5840 pounds per year
Balance of town at completion of stage one:
625,000 gallons per day containing.035 Gr N/L average is as follows:
625,000 G(365 days)3.8 L/G(0.35 Mg N/L)/(448 g/1)=67,890 pounds per year
The effect of stage one completion compared with present systems in use.
Stage one leaves 5840 lbs plus 67890 lbs or 73,730 pounds per year
135,780 lbs.(now)-73,730 lbs.(with stage one) = 62,050 lbs. (54%reduction)
10,000 homes now average.035 Mg N/L after stage one will average .019Mg N/L
Positive Mitigating cercumstances:
Personal use of water is closer to 30 gallons per day than the 50 gallons used above.
This factor alone reduces the above impacts by 40%
The homes not in the"high density"stage one area are further from impact areas.
This factor means attenuation reduces their impact below the.019 Mg N/L ave.
Previous population growth rates are at this time unsustainable
This factor reduces"previous" build out senarios
Acquiring recreational and conservation areas by the town will continue
This will continue to reduce the"previous" build out senario
Persons per household is declining in Mashpee
This factor means average household impact is less
As available land is reduced, more multiple units are built(condos and apartments)
Mashpee requires them to build private waste water systems(0 impact)
Storm water runoff is now being diverted to reduce impact
This will reduce the Nitrogen compounds reaching our watersheds
Estuaries can be dredged to enhance tidal flow
This will reduce Nitrogen in our estuaries
Ponds can be cleaned up with I/A systems, sewers, prohibitions, and aeiration
This will allow natural attenuation to recover in these areas
