We would not require
lift stations as all STEP system would eaily pump directly to the point of treatment.
Funding/Concept Plan/Critical Areas
The Sewer Commission and Planning Department have developed a concept plan demonstrating a potential
approach to providing denitrifying wastewater treatment in critical areas of Mashpee. Ongoing studies of
nitrogen impacts and loads may result in wastewater treatment facilities throughout Mashpee. However,
priorities are established for funding, based primarily on studies and consultant work. The Town of Mashpee's
intent is to address critical areas in small increments, involving smaller amounts of up-front capital costs.
Technology Description
Orenco Effluent Sewer
The collection system is an Orenco Effluent Sewer, a technology that has been optimized for more than 25
years. With an Orenco Effluent Sewer, raw sewage flows from the building to a watertight underground tank,
where primary treatment occurs via settling and natural biological processes. Solids remain in the tank,
decreasing in volume, which reduces biosolids treatment costs at secondary treatment facilities. Filtered liquid
effluent is then discharged (by high-head pump or gravity)through small-diameter service laterals to small-
diameter collection lines. These service and collection lines are shallowly buried and follow the contour of the
