Chief, Fisheries Statistics Investigation. Sandy Hook Marine Lab, November 1980—November
1985. Supervised staff of 25 -30 port agents operating out of field offices from Hampton, VA to
Rockland, ME. Port agents collected fisheries landing data from dealers, interviewed vessel
captains and collected biological samples essential for stock assessments needed for fisheries
management. Data and samples were preprocessed and forwarded to NMFS facility at Woods
Hole, MA for conversion to computerized files or further processing.
Chief, Fisheries Statistics and Economics Branch, Northeast Fisheries Science Center, National
Marine Fisheries Service, Woods Hole MA, December 1985—Dec 1990. Supervised Staff of
about 50 including port agents collecting data, IT staff who developed software and converted
the data to digital form, and Econom-ists who used the data to study impacts of fisheries
management on fishing communities. Initiated first NMFS domestic fisheries observer program
in the northeast U.S. and absorbed preexisting foreign observer program and staff.
During the period from 1990 until my retirement in January 2001 the Northeast Science Center
went through a series of reorganizations resulting in my being assigned different Branches to
administer. These Branches included at times responsibilities for all groundfish and shellfish
assessment cruises and deployment of observers to multiple fisheries from NC to ME and all US
swordfish longline vessels in the Atlantic. The observer program expanded rapidly and grew to
include multiple fisheries impacting protected species of marine mammals and sea turtles as
well as fisheries monitored primarily for bycatch and discard of finfish and shellfish. I attended
marine mammal take reduction team meetings in an advisory capacity and served on panels
reviewing and approving grant proposals for marine mammal and sea turtle research.
Selected Publications.
Christensen, D.J. 1970.
