ul'
Terrie Co q V
Cook f
From: Michael Talbot
Sent: Friday, December 28, 2018 3:10 PM
i • m A
• Rodney C. Inspired by the overwhelming approval of similar bylaws in Provincetown--and a
growing nationwide movement to help clean up our oceans and lands of plastic and to protect wildlife—the
EOC is requesting approval of these bylaw articles by the Board of Selectmen (BOS) for placement on the Town
Warrant..
Working with the Center for Coastal Studies based in Provincetown, the'Town of Provincetown developed
similar bylaws to restrict the use of two common, hard-to-recycle forms of plastic---plastic straws and
polystyrene. we cannot recycle polystyrene (symbolizedby number 6 on the package) at our transfer station,
for example. There are easily available alternatives to both of these plastics, and this is a logical extension of
our plastic bag ban bylaw passed overwhelmingly several years ago. Bans on these items are being adopted
by corporations and municipalities in much of the country, and it is very appropriate that a coastal "green
community" like Mashpee adopt similar bans here.
Please submit these articles to Town Counsel for review. We used severability and enforcement language
from Chapter 126 in these proposed articles. We would then like to schedule a hearing with the BOS to obtain
their approval of these articles. Contact me with any questions.
Best.regards.
