Collins, Town Manager
FROM: Glen E. Harrington, R.S., C.H.C., Health Agent
RE: Santuit.fond Algae Abatement
CC: Brian Baurrrgaertel, Chair, .Board of Health
Mr. Town Manager,
The following is a description of the suggestions to address the algae
gg
bloom at.Santuit Pond. The Selectmen have asked for a list of action items that
may help with: the reduction of phosphorous and other nutrients to the pond.
Within the jurisdiction of the Board of Hearth and as recommended by the
AECOM study of-the pond, septic inspections -of the abutting properties around
the pond will help determine if any of the septic'systems are failing and-not .
treating.the septic waste properly. I have already obtained a.list of the abutters
of the pond. A longer. term solution could include the septic' inspection. of all
septic systems within the Sdntuit Pond Watershed. I have also checked 'into
funding for any septic ' systems that may be considered in- failure. The
.Barnstable county Community Septic Loan Program is available and there -is
nitrogen offset money available from the Cape Cod commission for use.to reduce
nitrogen in Mashpee.
Another action item is to perform public outreach in the.form o,f' mailings,
internet -and TAT postings to educate the public about the use of fertilizers and' -
laundry soaps and other phosphorous-containing products for those properties .
within the Santuit Pond Watershed. .
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at 508-
539-1426 orX8553,
