Pros:Article 32 of the May,2019 Town Meeting requested a change in the Mashpee Town seal. By forming a committee and considering a new seal, the board would be following the spirit and intent of such direction. Cons: According to Town Counsel, Article 32 of the May, 2019 Town Meeting was directory in nature, rather than mandatory.Therefore,the Board could decide to take no action. Recommendation: The Board of Selectmen establish an ad hoc advisory committee for the purpose of preparing a recommendation for a new town seal.Such committee would consist of one Selectman,who would act as Chair. other committee members would include Administrative Assistant Terrie Cook, who would also perform the duties of recording secretary for the committee. Additional members would include:Town Planner Evan Lehrer,Library Director Kathy Mahoney,School Superintendent Patty DeBoer, Historical Commission member Joan Tavares"Avant and a Tribal Council designee to be determined by the Mashpee wampanoag Tribal Council.The committee would plan, review, design and recommend a draft town seal to be presented to the Board of Selectmen. A proposed town seal accepted by the Board of Selectmen would subsequently be brought before Town Meeting for adoption.
