MEMO
To- The Honorable Board of Selectman
From: Evan Lehrer,Town Planner
Date: February 19, 2020
Re: Summer Population Projections for July 10, 2020
Executive Summary,
I have calculated that there will be an estimated population of 35,736 persons in Mashpee at the peak
of the summer season.
In generating this population estimate, I checked my calculations from the 2019 population estimate
and noticed an error calculating the total number total occupied summer h 0 using units. This error
resulted in the, estimate for occupants of seasonal dwellings being approximately 281 people less than it
should have been, thus last year's estimate of 35,278 would have been more accurately represented at
a value of 3,5,590.
While this year's estimate shows an increase of around 458, people as compared to the figures from
2019, it would be more accurate to say the increase was not as significant when accounting for the 2019
error.Taking this into consideration, there is a marginal increase expected for peak season 2020 of
approximately 146 people.
There have been no subdivisions or significant residential development after the last building permits in
Southport were issued last year. This modest growth is explained by an additional 35 single-family
dwelling units permitted plus eight (8,) units in four(4) two-family townhouses permitted at Willowbend.
Data sources are indicated in the sections below and come from Town Departments: Building, Zoning
Board of Appeals, Assessors, Health, the Town Clerk, and Mashpee Housing Authority. Additional data,
was gathered from motel/inn property owners, the Mashpee Commons, team, and staff at the local
nursing/assisted living facilities Royal of Cotuit, Laurentide, and Bridges, by Epoch.
