ARKANSAS
Solution Bethel Heights installed an Orence Effluent Sewer, which
allowed widely dispersed properties to be connected as developed, and an
AdvanTex Treatment System coupled with drip irrigation to fulfill nutrient-
removal requirements.
The small city of Bethel Heights had always relied on septic tanks
for wastewater treatment. However, developers wanted to build
more densely than septic tanks allowed. In 1999,the state passed a
law allowing property owners to de-annex from one city and annex Design Parameters
to another if wastewater set-vice or other essential utilities were not • 1,800+people
available to them.Bethel Heights began facing de-annexations and loss •400 households(as of 2007)
•Several businesses(as of 2007)
of tax revenue, which threatened its very existence. . 180,000 gpd at bulldout
The town decided to build a municipal wastewater system.Planners S00 tart
Up Date
faced several constraints: Total Project Cost
Hilly terrain and the dispersed nature of new development would make $1.3 million
gravity collection expensive.
