Cape Cod. Your newspaper may, with last Fridays edition, be one of the sparks
that will motivate people to get more involved in addressing the issues,
that to date, have hampered progress.
I would like to suggest your staff could acknowledge some of the movers and
shakers that have recognized the Nitrogen problem and done things to
educate, implement, and otherwise move towards addressing this issue.
Open tracks of land, improved Title 5 Systems, restrictive Zoning, private
processing systems, surface run off restrictions, channel dredging,
cranberry bog changes, and pond reclamation all play a part. These items have
been implemented by individuals and town officials laboring in the shadows.
It's time for some acknowledgements.
As was so well illustrated in Friday's paper it is time for Cape residents,
and their elected officials, to move this issue on to a front burner:
There is undeniable evidence that our personal liquid waste is the major
source of Nitrogen pollution.
There is undeniable evidence that everyone lives in a watershed which may
or may not be within a town's boundaries.
There is undeniable evidence that Nitrogen pollution has an accumulative
effect on our environment.
There is undeniable evidence of lack of cooperation between towns that
share watersheds.
There is undeniable evidence that there are local politics and lack of
knowledge within towns that prevent effectively addressing this issue.
The Mashpee Enterprise has correctly confirmed that Science, Information,
Education, and Political Cooperation are the solution to the present
quagmire on decision making progress on the Cape.
This quagmire can and will be best addressed by education and
encouragement blended with regular doses of credit where due and nudges where
needed.....A perfect challenge for quality reporting and editorial comment ...
Keep up the good work
Joe Lyons
Mashpee Resident
Managing Editor
The Mashpee Enterprise
Office: 508-548-4700, ext. 228
Cellular: 301-520-7616
Email: kehrl@capenews.net
12/6/2010
