32
Report of the Veterans' Agent
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen
Mashpee, Massachusetts
Dear Sirs:
The following is a report of the Department of Veterans'
Services for the calendar year 1961.
When submitting a budget for Veterans' Benefits, the
agent must of necessity anticipate, as far as possible, the
l needs of a community under this program for the coming
year. When arriving at a recommended amount for a budget,
it is impossible to anticipate unforeseen expenditures particu-
larly hospital and medical expenditures.
The total expenditures of Veterans' Benefits for 1961
were $4,304.96. Of this amount, 509 will be reimbursed to the
Town by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The total
appropriation for the year was $4,500.00 and I am happy to
report that I was able to live within my budget for the past
year. The Town was also reimbursed $143.56 as part payment
for a lien.
The older veterans and their dependents, as is to be ex-
pected, require more medical expense as the years go by,
Whenever possible, every effort is made to place veterans in
government hospitals which results in a financial assist to the
Mashpee taxpayers. Dependents of veterans are not eligible
for government assistance as to hospital care. Veterans who
have non -service disabilities are not eligible for medical
care at home, and only VA hospitals when beds ,are available
and other requirements are met.
The only permanent recipients at present are World War
I Veterans, their widows, and parents of World War II vet,
