32 <br />Report of the Veterans' Agent <br />To the Honorable Board of Selectmen <br />Mashpee, Massachusetts <br />Dear Sirs: <br />The following is a report of the Department of Veterans' <br />Services for the calendar year 1961. <br />When submitting a budget for Veterans' Benefits, the <br />agent must of necessity anticipate, as far as possible, the <br />l needs of a community under this program for the coming <br />year. When arriving at a recommended amount for a budget, <br />it is impossible to anticipate unforeseen expenditures particu- <br />larly hospital and medical expenditures. <br />The total expenditures of Veterans' Benefits for 1961 <br />were $4,304.96. Of this amount, 509 will be reimbursed to the <br />Town by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The total <br />appropriation for the year was $4,500.00 and I am happy to <br />report that I was able to live within my budget for the past <br />year. The Town was also reimbursed $143.56 as part payment <br />for a lien. <br />The older veterans and their dependents, as is to be ex- <br />pected, require more medical expense as the years go by, <br />Whenever possible, every effort is made to place veterans in <br />government hospitals which results in a financial assist to the <br />Mashpee taxpayers. Dependents of veterans are not eligible <br />for government assistance as to hospital care. Veterans who <br />have non -service disabilities are not eligible for medical <br />care at home, and only VA hospitals when beds ,are available <br />and other requirements are met. <br />The only permanent recipients at present are World War <br />I Veterans, their widows, and parents of World War II vet, <br />
