33
Report of the Harbor Master
To Selectmen & Citizens of the
Town of Mashpee
Buoys were painted and repaired, mooring chains and
tackle reconditioned, and placed to mark the channel around
Warren's Point in Waquoit Bay. Obstructions in the form of
old waterlogged pilings appeared in the channel last spring,
and these were towed away.
Through the cooperation of Mr. Leonard Peck of Cotuit,
markers were placed in what little channel there is into Pop-
ponessett Bay, with the Town of Barnstable sharing the cost.
I have been in touch with Cmdr. Hauser, Harbormaster
of Falmouth, in regard to putting markers on the jetties at
the entrance to Waquoit Bay. It seems to be a waste of time
and money to put up pipe stanchions with reflectors on the
jetties because vandals tear them down. However, we are
hopeful that the Coast Guard will place one or two buoys just
off the jetties. If not, perhaps we can put out a suitable buoy
or marker as a joint project with the Town of Falmouth.
With the rapid increase in pleasure boating, there is in-
creasing demand for a navigable channel into Popponessett
Bay. In our section of Waquoit Bay, the channel around War-
ren's Point into Great and Little Rivers is shoaling in, and we
should start the machinery in motion to have this dredged.
This is a necessity for our commercial fisherman as well as
the pleasure boatmen.
During the season, numerous calls were received for in-
formation about moorings and markers, complaints about
water skiers and speedsters, and requests for more signs and
buoys. Most of these were in the spirit of cooperation and
good citizenship.
Enforcement officers from the Massachusetts Division of
Motor Boats were in our area a couple of times, and were
i
i.
