14 <br /> The social worker vacancy was filled at the end of this <br /> year. After a period of orientation and review a statement <br /> of her services will be made available to appropriate agencies <br /> in the County. <br /> On September 10, 1968, the Massachusetts Department of <br /> Public Health made available mumps vaccine to immunize <br /> students in the 7th, 8th, and 9th grades who have no history <br /> j of mumps or receiving mumps vaccine. The junior high <br /> !' school group was selected for the initial phase of the pro- <br /> gram because the incidence of complications from mumps is <br /> highest in adolescents and adults. Five towns in Barnstable <br /> County have completed a program for this age group. <br /> DENTAL HEALTH—Alice Dalzell <br /> Dental hygiene service in Barnstable County in 1968 was <br /> a combination of direct service to pre-school programs and <br /> schools, educational programs to communities and schools, <br /> M consultation and research. Every town on the Cape was <br /> d covered with some kind of dental program or consultation. <br /> Two schools, Nazareth and Holy Trinity, which had never <br /> received service before, were added to the list. <br /> Much work was done at the pre-school level. During the <br /> summer, topical fluoride treatments were given to children <br /> entering the Orleans School System. The Dental Hygienist <br /> was a member of the team consultation group to Head Start <br /> groups and programs, both summer and year-round, and gave <br /> direct service to these programs. All children were screened <br /> and some fluoride treatments were given if the child had not <br /> had the treatment previously. Many parent classes were held <br /> which gave an excellent opportunity for dental health edu- <br /> cation. <br /> An Epidemiological Study to determine the fluoride con- <br /> tent of tooth enamel was conducted in the Barnstable School <br /> System. This study was a co-operative effort with the Forsyth <br /> Dental Research Center, Massachusetts Division of Dental <br /> ` Health, Barnstable County Health Department, and the <br /> School System, and financed through a research grant to <br /> Forsyth. , Children in grades 4 and 5 of the Hyannis East <br /> Elementary took part in the study and the County Hygienist <br /> was the clinician. Results of this study have not as yet been <br /> compiled. <br /> During Dental Health Week, February 4-11, a poster con- <br /> test was held in conjunction with the Cape Cod Dental Society <br /> and the Council in Dental Health.
