124
Report of the School Principal
I ,
To: Mr. Clayton E. Campbell, Superintendent
of Schools, School Committee and Citizens
of the flown of Mashpee:
The annual report of the Samuel G. Davis School is here-
with submitted from the principal.
Enrollment
Our total school enrollment is 331, with 52 pupils en-
rolled in the 7th and 8th grades of the Lyle Junior High
School at Otis Air Force Base, 67 students have registered in
grades 9-12 at Lawrence High School, Falmouth and three c h
are taking courses at the Barnstable Vocational High School
in Hyannis. .
Enrollment at the Samuel G. Davis School continues to
be high. As of October 1, 1969, 209 pupils were registered in
grades K-6. During the last two months of the year enroll-
ment reached 221 boys and girls. Thirty-three children regis-
tered for kindergarten classes in September and the large
s
number of pupils in grade three made it necessary for the
school committee to assign two third grades and to use the
basement room
in the Town Library for kindergarten classes.
No class in grades K-6 have more than twenty-seven pupils.
This is an excellent teacher-pupil ratio, permitting each
child maximum opportunity to achieve optimum pupil growth
during the year.
The school department has found the facilities provided
by the library trustees highly suitable for the kindergarten
program and wish to thank them for making this program
possible.
Late in the year, the federal government announced a
reduction in manpower at Otis Air Force Base and a phasing
out of several large military units. Whereas, over thirty-five
per cent of our children are federally connected, it was sur-
mised that we would lose at least ten to fifteen per cent of
Otis connected pupils but at the end of the year our enroll-
ment remained 210.
