126
were unheard of thirty years ago. Television, modern means
of communication, news media and new modes of travel open
to them experiences-and understandings that become part of
their every day living.
Children reflect the society in which they live. Today, Y
they live .in a world of great change reflected by world wide
unrest, confusion and dishonesty in high places, disrespect
for authority, a breakdown of the home and family influence,
and a lack of good moral guidlines — all these factors play
a heavy influence in the daily lives of our children.
For years, we have taught children to think critically, to
become involved, to speak out against things they see wrong
in society. Today, they are trying to tell us they are not
pleased with the world they live in and are saying so.
If we are to help them make a better world maybe it is
more sensible not to worry as much about what we have
taught but to be concerned about what we must teach in the
future and to remember the advice of the great French writer
and philosopher Jean Jaques Rousseau "Nature would have
them children before they are men. If we try to.invert this
order we shall produce a forced fruit, immature and flawless,
fruit which will be rotten before it is ripe; we shall have
young doctors and old children - childhood has its own way
of seeing, thinking and feeling."
Mashpee P.T.A.
The Mashpee P.T.A. has had another successful year.
The membership reflects that nearly fifty per cent of the
parents are members. A tribute to former president Craig
Green. Under the leadership of Mrs. Priscilla Rollings, presi-
dent, each monthly meeting has been educational and stimu-
lating.
Plans for the year include:
1. A Saturday Morning Story Hour at the Town Library
for all age children—to develop a deep love for read-
ing and appreciation of books.
2. An annual P.T.A. Supper.in February to raise funds
to take a class to the Science Museum in Boston in
the Spring.
3. An Art Show.
