119
The parent has the supposed excuse of love's blindness,
but what excuse has the educated professional in our nation's
schools? We are trained and experienced, aware and armed,
employed and committed. We operate in the school — the
training and proving ground for life and living. If we have;
not transmitted to our students the democratic concept of
interdependency and individual responsibility, then we, too,
are blind.
The old farmer recognized the headstrong impetuosity of
all the young and the firm restraining guidance of the truly
loving parent. He knew nothing about schools except that,
in his day, school was a serious place of rules, order, hard
work, and respect for authority. But where I sit in the seat
of the Superintendent of Schools, I can see the parent and
the school and,for the child of our violent times, I am deeply
concerned.
Respectfully submitted,
CLAY'T'ON E. CAMPBELL,
Superintendent of School's
i .
