43
Report of the Chief of Police
TO: Honorable Board of Selectmen and
Citizens of the Town of Mashpee
An evaluation of the year 1970 reveals that the Depart-
ment is continuing as a self-sustaining entity which has
been qualified to cope with our law enforcement problems.
You, the citizens, have made our problems easier by voting
the addition of a Secretary/Dispatcher and an increase in
personnel. We are thankful for the support.
Though emergency trips by ambulance and cruiser have
only increased slightly, patrol mileage has increased by ap-
proximately 20,000 miles. Payment of court fines to the
Treasury is comparable to the previous year, however, court
convictions have increased. The budget reflects an increase
of 1496 which is considerably less than last year. Education
of the Police to place our professional status on a level with
other law enforcement agencies is a continuing process.
Regarding the crime statistics, offenses have increased
36.5%. There were 192 arrested and detained in the local
lock-up none of whom were the result of noisy parties. A
total of 8 were charged with narcotic law violations. A com-
parison of the report to the Commonwealth listed below with
that of 1969 will reveal increases in many areas. .
Again this year, we invite your attention to the fact that
there is a need for a larger facility to house our Department.
The cost of labor and materials is an annual increasing
product in our society. The rooms presently utilized as a Po-
lice Station are not sufficient for day to day operations. It
is realized that the outlay for a new station is a tremendous
expenditure but such a facility would be an asset to the Town
for many years in the future.
I
